I was finishing “Beautiful Outlaw” and read, “what do you want to do with Jesus?” The quick answer is “I just want to hang out with Jesus and do what He is doing!” It is awesome to consider that Jesus invites us into life with him. We actually get to join Him as He makes ongoing preparations for establishing His Eternal Kingdom. We get to be the people who see that one Jesus is pursuing and, filled with his compassion, love that person well.
However, if I could do any one thing with Jesus I would go fishing with him. There are so many Biblical metaphors that are found where the sand meets the sea.
- I taste the salty water and see if I am losing my saltiness.
- I catch a fish and ponder my partnership with Christ in being a “fisher of men.”
- I see a boat and imagine Peter swimming for shore to see Jesus.
- I feel the sand and know that the voice of God commands the water to proceed no further.
- I kiss the sun and know that the power of God controls its atomic reactions.
- I hear a child laugh and know my Father rejoices.
- I see a cloud and know He can calm any storm.
- I feel the breeze and know his hand touches my cheek.
I know not everyone enjoys the beach but I know that if you take the time to look around you, you will find Jesus inviting you into life with him. He has sent His Holy Spirit to empower you and encourage you in this honored life.
Recently I have seen my Jesus in action at a picnic, during a corn hole tournament, during a firework show, in the life of a server at a restaurant, in the life of a tire salesperson at Sam’s Club and in the eyes of a man with a weed eater in his hand.
As excited as I am to see Jesus in all these places, the location I want to see him most is in me. I want to hear his voice when I talk. I want to see his hands when I reach. I want to feel his love when I bless.
This all reminds me of a song by Kari Jobe, the words of which read,
Let your glory fall
Overwhelm my soul
Let your presence flood my life oh Lord
Break upon me now
Let your love crash down
Let your glory fall
So today I want to hang out with Jesus and do whatever it is that he is doing around me. I may not be at the beach fishing but Jesus can be found right here with us. The invitation is open. Let's hang out with Jesus.
