Pastor, what if our words are telling half the population of the U.S. that they are not welcome in our church? Would you stop using those words or would you simply not care?
Could it be the popular church culture phrase, “You are welcome here!” is doing us more harm than good?
My goal in this post is to transparently wrestle with where the issue of immigration intersects with the life and teaching of Jesus. When I wrestle with the issue, I find a great deal of hypocrisy (in me and in the Church) and I don’t know how to resolve the conflict.
In 2000, Blockbuster was offered to buy Netflix for $50 million. Thinking Netflix had no future, they turned down the offer. In 2018, Netflix revenues were $15.8 billion. Blockbuster no longer exists.
At a recent conference for pastors and leaders of my denomination, there was a call to embrace change. The first plenary speaker clearly defined reality and I was optimistic about what was to come and was not disappointed. After having time to digest the event I feel there may have been one glaring omission, or at least something I didn’t hear.
